My Good Deed For the Day

Yesterday evening, I was blessed with the opportunity to hold a very young fawn. The fur was so soft and warm. I wanted to cradle and cuddle it, but I knew better.

The little guy was scared to death and those long spindly legs had some mean looking hooves. He was squirming and bleating for his mama so I figured I better make my visit with him as short as possible.

It all started when Mattie began frantically barking at the intruder as he entered our yard from the cornfield. In his panicked state, the young fawn ran the wrong way winding up in an old unused dog pen. The enclosure was an overgrown jungle filled with briers, brambles and broken tree limbs.

He was running helter-skelter, bashing his poor little head against the wire fence, exhausting himself and getting more desperate to find his mama. I couldn't let that go on so I braved the unknown and entered the pen. I had no idea what I was going to do but I had to do something.

My chance to catch him came when he became stuck between a tree and the fence. I slowly reached over and grabbed the fawn, dislodging him from his trap. My heart melted as I held him, but then I thought, Now what do I do with him?

I carried him back to the other side of the yard and released the little fellow into the cornfield, hoping mama was close by. With all the noise he had been making, his mother couldn't help but hear him. I haven't seen him or heard his cries so I am optimistic he's safe and sound now.

Robert called me a heroine, saving the life of an innocent creature. I look at it as something anyone would have done in the same situation. But I do feel like I did a good deed and that makes me very proud and happy.

Just wanted to share my happy moment with you folks. I'll probably never touch a deer again. This is one memory that will last forever.
