Not necessarily so.
Whether or not the kid belongs to you, what could be better than sitting with a child in your lap reading a book?
Think about it:
A preschooler looking at the pictures and getting all excited when the page is turned and a new picture appears.
The child taking over and telling his/her own story to go along with the illustrations.
The giggles when a silly dog thinks he can fly like a bird and winds up falling flat on his face or when the silly pooch sticks his nose where it doesn't belong and gets his nose pinched by a fiddler crab. (sorry, I just had to plug Patchwork Dog and Calico Cat)
Sometimes, you can see the wheels turning in the young mind and then days later, questions may pop up out of the blue about a story you read together.
You will know the love of reading has continued to grow when a middle grader or teen is constantly late for supper because he/she just had to finish a chapter (or two) first.
Congratulations, you have passed the reading bug on to the next generation.
Many of us have stories about our experiences with books and now you have a place to share them. We have started a new blog called "Inspiring Children...One Book at a Time" where you can share your tales of reading or books that made an impression on you or someone you love. Take a look and send me an email if you would like to contribute a guest post, greta799(at)yahoo(dot)com.
One of the most valuable gifts you can give a child is the love of reading.
